 The Beep Test

As part of the Physical Education program here at ÅŒtorohanga College, we use regular fitness testing to track students' progress throughout the year.

At the end of each term, students complete the Multi-Stage Fitness Test or The 'Beep Test' - a 20m shuttle run which tests aerobic endurance and can be used to estimate VO2 Max (Maximum Oxygen Uptake).

This test involves continuous running between two lines 20m apart in time to recorded beeps. The athletes stand behind one of the lines facing the second line, and begin running when instructed by the recording.

The speed at the start is quite slow and gradually increases. The subject continues running between the two lines, turning when signaled by the recorded beeps.

There are usually 21 levels in the test, each with 'laps' that increase as the levels increase.

The athlete must get one foot on or over the line before the 'beep' and must not leave before the 'beep'.

The test is stopped when the athlete can no longer run the shuttles or when they can not make the line for two consecutive times.
