Hauora

Hauora is a Māori philosophy of health and well-being unique to New Zealand.

There are four dimensions of Hauora;

- Taha Tinana / Physical Well-Being

- Taha Hinengaro / Mental & Emotional Well-Being

- Taha Whānau / Social Well-Being

- Taha Wairua / Spiritual Well-Being

The 'Whare Tapa Wha' Model represents Hauora with each of the four walls of the whare representing each of the four dimensions.

All four walls of a whare, just like all four dimensions of Hauora are needed for strength and stability.

All four dimensions of Hauora influence and support the others.

Taha Tinana / Physical Well-Being

The physical body (inside and out).

Its growth, development,  ability to move and ways of caring for it.

Taha Hinengaro / Mental & Emotional Well-Being

Thoughts and feelings.

Coherent thinking processes.

Acknowledging and expressing thoughts and feelings and responding constructively.

Taha Whānau / Social Well-Being

Relationships with others.

Family, friends and other people.

Feelings of belonging, compassion, caring and social support.

Taha Wairua / Spiritual Well-Being

Values, beliefs, personal identity, self awareness, goals.

Searching for meaning or purpose in life.

Can relate to religion and culture.
